About Farmpedia

The free encyclopedia helping small-scale farmers grow smarter, more resilient livelihoods.

Farmpedia is an online, free, open-access encyclopedia of sustainable, low-cost, gender-friendly solutions to empower small-scale (smallholder) farmers in developing nations. Chapters can be translated into local languages and downloaded or printed — see the sidebar for options.

The book is intended for farmers and their families, farming organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international agencies, agricultural extension personnel, schools, and colleges. Each chapter critically evaluates an innovation and provides practical assistance to get started.

Who writes it

Chapters are written by students at the University of Guelph, Canada, from 2016–2021, with 25 new chapters added each year starting in 2022.

Editorial team

Founded and edited by Professor Manish N. Raizada, Department of Plant Agriculture, University of Guelph. Associate Editor in 2017: Dr. Jen Wilker (now at CIAT, Colombia). Publishing assistance: Phelystus Wayeta (Kenya).

Origins

Many chapters originated in conversation with smallholder women farmers in Nepal, as part of the Sustainable Agriculture Kit for Nepal project (SAKNepal).

Funding

Generously funded by IDRC (Ottawa) and Global Affairs Canada, as part of a CIFSRF project in collaboration with LI-BIRD (Nepal).
